The third day took us down a long and slow descent down the valley we gazed down the previous day. First came the sands, then a marsh, with the steam zigzagging the valley the whole time. For the last part the marshes gave way to waterfalls with trees overhanging.

The drizzle started halfway through. It let up when we got to the campsite long enough to set up our tents and wash our feet in the ice cold stream. A couple of dogs ran up to meet us when a hiking couple walked by. They dogs looked good and we assumed they were theirs, so it was too late when we noticed the stench of one of the dogs. It had already befriended us. It poured for the rest of the day and the dog, soon to be named “stinky,” shared the dinner tent with us, much to our dismay. The conversation never strayed far from the topic of the dog and how stinky it was and who had the misfortune to be its best friend.

The rain put the agency provided equipment to the test. The two person tent leaked. The rest of us were fine.

The downpour helped make us ready for the end of the trek, which might have felt short without a little hardship.
