South America Day 11: Quito

New week, new teacher.

I asked Mario¹ to take me to the shops where stolen things are sold. He took me to the mall nearest the place where my camera was stolen. There were stories and stories of little shops with various electronics, mostly phones, in the windows. Some things were new, some looked questionable. I did not see my camera. I wonder if it would be morally justifiable to buy a replacement here.

There have been many protests in Quito over the past few weeks, mostly by or on behalf of the indigenous population. The police pictured are surrounding the presidential palace for a diplomatic visit. Many carry signs on their riot gear reminding demonstrators to keep the peace because the police have families too. ¹ Mario is one of the support crew at the Spanish school. He’s the one who takes us around town on excursions and if we need anything else.  He only speaks Spanish, so even though he is very helpful, it’s be a bit difficult to interact with him in the first two weeks.
