South America Day 6: Quito and the Equator

Today I had lunch with one of the girls at the school at a small cheap restaurant ($2) down a corridor off the street in Old Town. At the end of lunch my bag, which I had hanging off the back of my chair (contrary to oft repeated instructions), was gone. We ran around the restaurant asking the waiters about the missing bag only to get a long rant in Spanish which I did not understand. When we went outside, a woman from the restaurant across the street offered to help me talk to the police. She spoke English well – it turned out she has family in Manchester, NH – and was very helpful. The police were not. I’ll have to go back and visit her restaurant.

Most of my camera equipment – vanished. Also, my homework got stolen.

I hurried back to the school to get a few lectures on safety and catch the tour to the equatorial monument “Mitad del Mundo”. The museum there featured a few indigenous houses and some gimmicks around a sign for latitude 0 and coreolus forces.Equator
