South America Day 33: Getting to the Galapagos Islands

Retrospective

The Galapagos flight is special security-wise.  Despite being a domestic flight, the process is much like going through customs.  They want to make sure no organic contaminants make it onto the islands.  There is a special checkpoint at UIO to check the bags.  They also charge a $20 fee at this point.  There are a couple of customs-like cards to fill out on the plane, and another checkpoint on arrival at the Baltra airport (GPS), which charges the $100 entry fee to the national park.  The separation of the fees is a little annoying and something you need to be prepared for.

UIO is a nice airport for departure.  They have power, 120V and USB, under the seats. They also have the decency to separate domestic flights for easier security.  This was my first time in business class – totally unnecessary for this short flight, but nice and roomy.

Past all the checkpoints at Baltra, the guide was waiting and calling the name of the boat – Flamingo.  From here on, he is in charge.  He pulled together the group and guided us to the shuttle, ferry, and bus to get to the marina in town.
